In our family, we'd say if you want to get rid of something give it to Mom (mine) and ask her to put it in a safe place. You will never see it again. The sad part is many years later Mom developed Alzheimer's.

I think, though I don't know, that it starts out small, and then just snowballs into something uncontrollable.
