Spring Rain

Spring Rain
We’re waiting. Searching the wide, open, endless blue skies morning, noon, and night, but there are no clouds. We plant what we can and water sparingly, with what we have. And each day we measure what remains. Not enough to harvest. Maybe enough till the rain comes.
The men group together talking about the great drought, water conservation, going over and over everything they know, or have heard, or have ever read, about how to bring the rains. The women are talking too. Cooking with less water, cleaning with less water, bathing…surviving with less water, till the rain comes.
ISOLATION
The phone never rings, unless It’s someone is trying to sell me something. I should start talking to them. I could ask about their days, their families, their lives, their opinions on political events. Not that I care, but it would be someone to talk to for a few minutes.
No one visits. They have families, their grown children and their grandchildren are their ones and twos, etc. I suppose I could count the delivery people. Once a week, once every two weeks someone stops by with medications or groceries.
Beyond that, there is no one, no one at all.
(Sorry it took so long. I seem to be dried up. LOL!)

I love these! I think challenges are perfect because they offer a writer a chance to explore something never explored in longer pieces. And to really focus a laserbeam.
That second is a heart-wrencher.
