Drabble: Vessel
And every night before sleeping she clutched the tiny sterling image of St. Anne to her heart and kneeling, whispered.
“Pray for me? Pray that my womb open to receive. Pray that his seed be living and my egg worthy of life. Pray that I be a vessel. Pray for me.”
And every month she waited, breath bated, then broken-hearted when she bled.
She knew he saw it in her eyes before she shook her head.
“Maybe a gold medallion?” He suggested.
“Maybe,” she replied.
And so every night she knelt, clutching the tiny gold image and she prayed.
